13th and Locust, December 9, 1981

While attempting to arrest William Cook, whom he had stopped for a traffic violation, Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner was shot once in the back by Cook's brother, Mumia Abu-Jamal. Faulkner shot back, wounding Jamal, who continued to fire at close range, killing Faulkner. Both were found at the scene. Convicted in 1982, Jamal maintains his innocence.
