August 5, 2006, 11th and Pine
At 2:30 in the morning of August 5th, Jamal Burton, 19, leaned in the window of a Lincoln Town Car and snatched a gold chain with a wedding ring on it from the driver and escaped on a bicycle. The victim, 70 year old Barry Mason pursued Burton, chasing him four blocks in his car, finally knocking the youth to the ground. Exiting his car, and making angry statements about the theft of his wedding ring, he shot Burton at least five times at the northwest corner of Louis I. Kahn Memorial Park park. Police officer Richard Butler, who was dispersing loiterers in the park was only steps away when he heard the gunshots. He arrived on the scene while Mason was still firing -- he arrested the senior citizen, recovering a .380 caliber pistol and Mason's wedding ring.
